A seagoing narrative in the tradition of Richard Henry Dana's classic
Two-Years Before the Mast
Robert B. Dixon was eighteen and right out of private school when he
set out on the brig Elizabeth from the port of New York
on what would be a fourteen month voyage. Between October 1875 and
December 1876, the Elizabeth, with a crew of eight,
carried railroad supplies to Vera Cruz, Mexico; a load of mahogany to
France; then loaded coal in Cardiff, Wales bound for Mexico;
and, then shipped a load of assorted lumber products to Boston.
During the course of the voyage, which
he likens to that taken by Richard Henry Dana, forty years prior, Dixon
rose to first mate.
Like Dana, Dixon later attended Harvard College. He went on to
become a physician in Boston
